I went to Checheno-Ingushetia for the first time in July 1978 to photograph monuments of old architecture remaining in the mountains. The publisher's commission was limited to a few accessible locations close to roads and built-up areas.

From
my first days there, I was so stunned by what I saw that the initial
schedule was broken and a single trip turned to be insufficient. The
images you see don't form a coherent story. It is rather a photographic
accompaniment to what I'd call my own sensation of Chechnya, a feeling
strengthened and intensified by the last years' events.
